Community

Yoga was never meant to be practiced alone.

For more than thirty years, Naturally Yoga has been a place where people gather to practice, to heal, to celebrate, to grieve, to learn, and to remember who they are.

This is the story of that community.

A Place to Belong

Every community has a beginning. Ours began with one student. Sheryl’s mother.

When Sheryl taught her very first yoga class in a rented room at a Unitarian church, we had advertised everywhere we could think of. I even took the day off from work to help check people in, convinced the room would be full. Only one person came. Her mother. Most people would have seen disappointment. Sheryl saw the person who had come. She taught that class with the same care and presence she would have offered a room filled with fifty students.

Looking back, I think that first class quietly established something that has remained true for more than thirty years. Naturally Yoga has never been about the number of people in the room. It has always been about the person standing in front of us. One student became two. Two became ten. Ten became hundreds. Over the years, thousands of people have walked through our doors. Some came looking for exercise. Some were searching for peace. Some arrived carrying grief. Others came to celebrate new beginnings. Many discovered something they hadn’t expected. They found a place where they could simply exhale.

More Than a Studio

There is another day I have never forgotten. On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was sitting in the parking lot of Giants Stadium with my HazMat team, waiting to be called to the World Trade Center. Meanwhile, people began arriving at Naturally Yoga. Not because they wanted to attend a yoga class. Because they didn’t know where else to go. In moments of uncertainty, people rarely search for a business. They search for a place that feels safe. That day reminded us what Naturally Yoga had quietly become. Not simply a yoga studio. A community.

Over the years we have laughed together. Cried together. Practiced together. Celebrated births. Mourned losses. Watched children grow into adults and adults become grandparents. Yoga brought us together. Life made us family.

What We Believe

Thirty years after teaching her first class, Sheryl wrote these words to our community. They capture more clearly than anything else the heart of Naturally Yoga.

We believe healing begins the moment we remember we belong.

We believe the body carries ancient wisdom.

We believe movement can become prayer.

We believe food, herbs, nature, and the changing seasons are among our greatest teachers.

We believe devotion opens the heart.

We believe community helps us remember what we cannot always remember alone.

We believe healing is not about becoming someone new. It is about returning to the wholeness that has always lived within us.

And yes… we also believe in a really good asana practice.

A Closing

The path of yoga is deeply personal.

Yet very few of us walk it entirely alone.

If our paths happen to cross someday—in a class, a workshop, a teacher training, or simply over a cup of tea—I hope you’ll discover what so many people have found here over the past three decades.

Not simply a yoga studio.

A place to belong.

Because…

You already do.
